Comb honey equipment cost comparison among traditional cut sections
of comb honey,
Romanov frames with sections, Bee-O-Pac System, Hogg Cassettes and Ross Round Sections
Since different types of equipment used in comb honey production yield results that vary in size and weight, I am introducing the term "conditional unit," which is equivalent to 16 Oz. The application of this term allows to compare the costs of comb honey collected through different equipment. |
1. Traditional cut sections of comb honey: a. Cut comb honey Kit - $ 36.00 This is the most economical Kit to produces comb honey. Kit includes 1--5 11/16" super, 10--5 3/8" frames, 10 sheets cut comb foundation, 40 Clamshell boxes, 1 S.S. comb honey cutter. Top Labels: $1.20 for 40 labels. Total Cost for 10 units/frames (64 Oz. each): $36.00 + $1.39 = $37.39 or $37.39 : 40 = $0.94 per one 16 Oz. unit Also you have to add assembly cost and comb cutting costs. b. Cut comb section cost, when you buy everything piece by piece Shallow Super Hive Body: $9.40; Wooden Frames: $8.50 for 10 frames; Comb Foundations: $4.38 for 10 sheets; 16 Oz. Clamshell Boxes: $32 for 40 boxes; Top Labels: $1.20 for 40 labels. Total Cost for 10 units/frames (64 Oz. each): $9.40 + $8.50 + $4.38 + 32.00 + $1.20 = $55.48 or $1.39 per one 16 Oz. unit (4-1/8" x 4-1/8"). Also you have to add assembly cost and comb cutting costs. Refill cost: $8.50 + $4.38 + $32 + $1.20 = $45.20 or $1.15 per one 16 Oz. unit. You can reuse frames, but with this approach you have to add the cost of frame reassembly . 2. Romanov frames with sections: Shallow Super Hive Body: $9.40; Wooden Frames: $20.00 for 10 frames; Comb Foundations: $4.38 for 10 sheets; Wooden Sections: $10.00 for 40 sections. Plastic Sections/solid square form will cost less!) 16 Oz. High-quality Plastic Comb Containers: $34 for 40 containers; Top Labels: $1.20 for 40 labels. Total Cost for 40 units (16 Oz. each): $9.40 + $20.00 + $4.38 +$10.00 + $34.00 + $1.20 = $78.98 or $1.98 per one 16 Oz. unit (4-1/8" x 4-1/8"). No additional comb cutting costs! Refill cost: $10.00(sections)+ $34.00(containers) + $4.38(foundations) + $1.20(labels) = $49.58 or $1.24 per one 16 Oz. unit. 3. Bee-O-Pac System: Shallow Super Hive Body: $9.30; Bee-O-Pac Frames and Lids: $49.95 per 8 frames; Labels: $9.00 for 128 labels. Total cost for 128 units (4 Oz. each): $9.30 + $49.95 + $9.00 =$68.25 or $0.53 per one 4 Oz. unit or $2.13 per one 16 Oz. conditional unit. Refill cost: $49.95 + $9.00 = $58.95 or $1.84 per one 16 Oz. conditional unit. 4. Hogg Cassettes: Half Comb Cassette Super Complete: $84.65; Cassette Labels: $4.5 for 40 labels. Total Cost for 40 units (12 Oz. each): $84.65 + $4.50 = $89.15 or $2.23 per one 12 Oz. unit (cassette) or $2.97 per one 16 Oz. conditional unit. Refill cost: $64.95 + $4.50 = $69.45 or $2.32 per one 16 Oz. conditional unit. 5. Ross Round Sections: Complete Ross Round Super Kit (without covers): $54.95; Ross Round Covers: $19.90 for 64 covers; Ross Round Labels: $2.88 for 32 labels. Refill cost: $14.95(rings)+ $9.95(covers) + $5.00(foundations) + $9.00(labels) = $38.90 or $2.43 per one 16 Oz. conditional unit. Refill cost without foundations: $14.95(rings)+ $9.95(covers) + $9.00(labels) = $33.90 or $2.12 per one 16 Oz. conditional unit. But you have to remember, that with foundations, bees make combs more quickly.
